Rügen Island - National Park Jasmund, Königsstuhl, Treetop walk

Rügen is Germany’s largest island, located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea. The "gateway" to Rügen island is the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, where it is linked to the mainland by road via the Rügen Bridge, crossing the two-kilometre-wide Strelasund, a sound of the Baltic Sea. In June 2011, UNESCO awarded the status of a World Heritage Site to the Jasmund National Park, famous for its pristine Ancient Beech Forest and spectacular chalk cliffs like the King’s chair (Königsstuhl), the main landmark of Rügen island.

We will first walk from the parking area in Hagen ca. 3 km through the Beech Forest, past Hertha-lake, to the famous Königsstuhl. There we will enjoy superb views from “Viktoriasicht” towards Königsstuhl and finally, after an introductory guided tour by the NP staff, reach the deck directly there – 118 m above the Baltic Sea.

After lunch, participants can visit the National Park Centre and the interactive exhibition “We bring nature’s secrets to light”.

Back at the parking area, we will drive to the Naturerbe Zentrum Rügen at Prora to visit the treetop walk. The 1,250 m long walkway and the “Eagle’s Nest” view Tower (82 m above sea level) wind their way through the island’s deciduous forest. Discover the region’s unique flora and fauna at eye-level with the treetops of Naturerbe Zentrum Rügen.
