Michael Mendl is a Professor of Animal Behaviour and Welfare at the University of Bristol’s Veterinary School. His research focuses on the connections between emotional and cognitive processes, particularly how attention, memory and decision-making are influenced by and influence emotional states. Drawing on behavioural science, human psychology and cognitive neuroscience, he develops new ways of assessing animal emotion and welfare that work to improve their well-being and conditions. He also explores the evolution and function of emotional states and sentience, seeking to improve our understanding of animal cognition, emotion and individuality.
